This post is going to be a brief overview of the current metagame.

But first: What is the metagame?

Simply put, the metagame is what’s trendy.

The preferred champions and ways to build them and the Teamcomps.

What is the current metagame?

The current metagame is the ‘Tanky DPS” or “Beefy DPS”. People tend to build champions with high resistances and many hit points, but don’t sacrifice much damage output for their investment in survivability.

How is this possible?

When building according to the current metagame one combo comes to mind:

Atma’s Impaler and Warmog’s Armor A.K.A.  Atmog’s.

This gives you  1370HP , 45Armor, 18% Critical Strike and the key effect, 2% of your maximum health is added to your attack damage.

This is most effective on DPS champions that benefit from health or just need survivability. Examples of these champions are Master Yi, Nasus, Irelia, Garen, etc.

What about casters?

Casters don’t have any build equivalent to the Atmog’s one, but they can, indeed, invest in survivability without sacrificing much of their damage output for it.

What items are suited for this?

Items that give you both a defensive stat and any another stat helpful to casters. The ones that come to mind are Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, Zhonya’s Hourglass and Haunting Guise.

Teamcomps (short for team composition(s)) are the combination of champions in your team.

The average Teamcomp contains one Tank, One Off-Tank, one supporter, one Caster and one DPS champion.

But this may, obviously, change according to the current champion metagame. Being the metagame “Tanky DPS”, most teams will contain one or even a few beefy damage dealers.

Extra information: Countering the metagame

So, there are Champions with tons of Health everywhere, what to do?!

The answer is: counter them.


Let’s focus on countering “Tanky DPS” for now.

Ask yourself:

What can they do and what do they have resistance against?

The answer is: They can deal moderate damage and defend well against flat damage because of their huge Health pool.

Then you need to find out about their weaknesses. Easy.

What do you do when you’re playing as a Caster and the enemy is stacking Magic Resistance? You buy Magic Penetration, of course! Void Staff, Abyssal Scepter and Sorcerer’s Shoes are great at reducing your target’s Magic Resistance!

But I prefer to play DPS Champions!

It’s as easy as getting some Armor Penetration. Look at items like Last Whisper, The Brutalizer or The Black Cleaver. These items are great for Physical Damage champions and completely cut through your enemies’ armor.

WARNING: Don’t get Black Cleaver and Last Whisper on the same build, as the percentage is only applied after flat amounts and it would render Last Whisper useless. Either one or another.

Also, don’t forget that a large Health pool makes them a lot more vulnerable to percentage based damage!

Abilities like Malzahar’s Null Zone and Poppy’s Devastating Blow deal damage based on how much health the opponent has, the more Health, the more damage!

There are also items you can get that deal percentage based damage, like Madred’s Bloodrazor and Deathfire Grasp.
